SOME HISTORICAL DATA

It was in 1628 that Dom João Melo, bishop-count of Coimbra, donated the forest of Bussaco to the first Carmelite that wanted to start a house of Desert: the " bos sacrum " (it is one of the possible etymologies of the name of the I besiege).

Two people with the indispensable base knowledge led off the construction of the convent on August 7, 1628: the Frei Alberto of the Virgin, brother Donato of the Order and natural of Chaves, that knew architecture, and the brother António de Chagas, official bricklayer. The community's regular life begins officially in the 19 of March of 1630.

Parallel to the religious life, the Carmelite Friars will develop intense planting activity and conservation of the forest.
